In a nutshell: A review by Public Health England has concluded that 1600 heart attacks and 4000 cases of diabetes a year could be avoided by checking the blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and lifestyle of 40-74 year olds. Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, has said that 650 lives a year could be saved as a result of the NHS Health Checks. Prospective study of breakfast eating and incident coronary heart disease

In a nutshell: The purpose of this research was to examine eating habits and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). More than 25,000 men without cardiovascular disease participated in the study, and were followed up over 16 years. Men who did not eat breakfast had a 27% higher risk of developing CHD than men who ate breakfast.

‘Physical literacy’ programme for Scottish schools

In a nutshell: Every local authority in Scotland is planning to introduce the ‘Better Movers and Thinkers’ initiative in schools next term. This ‘physical literacy’ programme is based on a training model used by Olympic athletes and football players. It has been used in Canadian and Australian schools, and a pilot scheme in North Lanarkshire recorded improvements in behaviour and attendance and had a positive effect on girls in particular.
